How to Clean Your Slipcovers

Updated: Aug 22, 2022

Life happens, and sometimes your furniture needs a good clean and refresh. Follow our guide below to learn how to properly care for and clean your slipcovers.

Liquid Spills

For liquid spills including wine, coffee, milk, soda, beer, urine, tea, or juices, start with a clean, dry, absorbent cloth to blot up as much of the liquid as possible. Then, follow up with a liquid detergent (1 tbsp.) and lukewarm water (16 oz.) mixture, and dab with a clean, damp cloth.

Check out this video showing us cleaning up a coffee spill with nothing but a paper towel!

Non-Liquid Spills

For non-liquid spills including ketchup, salsa, chocolate syrup, chocolate, ice cream, jelly, magic marker, pizza sauce, nacho cheese, or dirt/mud, use a soft brush or butter knife to remove the excess contaminants, then mix up a batch of lukewarm water (16 oz.) and liquid detergent (1 tbsp.), blot it with a dampened cloth, and rinse out the residual soap with a clean, damp cloth.

Stubborn Stains

Not all stains are created equal. In some cases of set-in spills, or those that have been rubbed into the fabric, you might need to seek the help of a professional cleaning service.

Make sure to give the cleaner the fabric code correlated with your products so they can follow the guidelines for spot cleaning. All East & Vine products use cleaning code W.

Here are three ideas for treating stubborn stains:

1) Wash them at home using detailed instructions and care. While we do not always recommend washing at home because it does require extra care and consideration, it can be done successfully using the instructions below. NOTE: Do not wash slipcovers more than 15 times. If this is done, the performance treatment will no longer be as effective at preventing and removing stains.

1) Run your washing machine through an empty cycle

Should you choose to wash your slipcovers at home, we recommend running your machine through an empty wash cycle before each cleaning to ensure the machine is free of residual detergent, bleach, or other impurities that could spot or stain the slipcovers.

2) Try to wash all pieces during the same cleaning

For best results, consider washing all pieces in your collection during the same cleaning (i.e.: cushion slipcovers, throw pillow slipcovers, frame slipcovers, etc.). This will help minimize potential color variations which could occur during washing. If necessary, avoid overloading your washing machine by separating the slipcovers into two or more loads; wash the slipcover body by itself and the slipcover cushions in a separate wash cycle(s).

3) Close all zippers on pillow covers and seat cushions before washing to prevent damage.

Wash slipcover(s) on the gentle cycle, cold water (105 degrees) using a mild detergent. Do NOT use BLEACH or detergent that contains a bleach additive. Remove the slipcover(s)immediately at the end of each wash cycle.

4) Air dry or use NO HEAT setting

Air drying is the preferred method of drying, but tumble drying using the NO HEAT setting can also be used. Remove the slipcover(s) while slightly damp. To ensure proper fitting after each washing put the slipcover(s) on the furniture while slightly damp and stand the cushions on end rotating them every 20-30 minutes until dry. NOTE: Do not wash slipcovers more than 15 times.

2) Hire a professional upholstery cleaning company to remove any stains from your slipcovers while they are on the frame. Slipcovers may shrink a bit even if dry cleaned, so cleaning while still on the frame will give you the best results.

3) Remove the affected slipcovers and take them to a dry cleaning or upholstery cleaning professional. Make sure to give the cleaner the fabric code correlated with your products so they can follow the guidelines for spot cleaning. All East & Vine products use cleaning code W.
